Death and the Maiden
Two pop songs on Antique Poems – Dinuk Wijeratne
For string quartet
String Quartet No. 14 D 810 – Franz Schubert
For string quartet
The string quartet is the type of chamber formation with the largest repertoire. Some works in its repertoire are so striking and dense that they can occupy almost a full concert.
This is the case of the quartet Death and the Maiden, penultimate string quartet by Franz Schubert, this genius who died at only 31 years old. This dense and moving work has marked the spirits since its creation.
So much so that this work resonated with the heart and mind of Dinuk Wijeratne, an Ottawa-based composer and JUNO Award winner for his work Two pop songs on Antique Poems. Music lovers are entitled to all the beauty, technique and complexity they expect from our greatest composers; neophytes find themselves completely immersed in the rhythmic and melodic appeal of some of today’s most exciting music.
The members of the Ensemble Prisme string quartet, Andréa Armijo-Fortin and Laura Nerenberg on violins, Olivier Philippe-Auguste on viola and Anne Contant on cello, are eager to share with you this music that marks the soul.
