« Music always tells a story. More often than not, it’s up to the listener to figure it out, but sometimes the story is self-explanatory. At the center of this concert, The Soldier’s Tale, music by the great Igor Stravinsky on a text by Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz denouncing the greed and cupidity behind all war, while a soldier sells his soul to the devil. In these troubled times, it was relevant to contrast this work with the music of the greatest Ukrainian composer, Sergei Prokofiev, whose quintet op. 39 was composed for a broke circus. To complete this program, a more modern reflection on the same theme (selling your soul to the devil) with the American Michael Dougherty and his earthy Dead Elvis. »
